Place: Thandalam (Than Thalam) History: Incidentally, the name Thandalam is derived from the Tamil phrase than thalam, a cool place. There used to be a large tank adjacent to the village. Sadly, that is now merely a large, bone-dry depression. It has been learnt that innumerable seers and sages used to halt in this village en-route from Tirupati to Kasi and perform puja. Sage Agastiyar is said to have stayed here and worshipped Lord Siva and hence the name Agastheeswar to the Lord here. There is also a Vinayaka temple on top of a small hillock. A new gopuram has been built and the vimaanam completely renovated. Both are restricted solely to essential sculptures, which have been executed under the supervision of Sri Ganapathy Sthapathy. Thandalam is situated between Sholingur and Thiruthani, off the Arakkonam road. The Vishnu temple is said to have been built towards the end of the Chola period.
